Theming (limiting the music to a few genres or a particular period or topic) can be very effective at certain times in most events. This seldom extends into the dance part of the evening unless it is a broad theme like, ‘The 60s’, ‘The 70s’, or ‘The 80s’, and even then only if the guests are aware of the theme ahead of time (i.e. it’s on the invitation). There are a relatively small number of songs that most people will get up and dance to so if you artificially limit the songs to be played you can end up with no one dancing.

Event: If you have a particular theme for your event the right music can enhance the impact of that theme. I can often help finding tracks that will reinforce the theme, likewise if you need a specific genre or ‘vibe’ for a key moment (i.e. during a speech or presentation) I can often help there, too. Wedding: Most weddings have certain colours running through everything from the attendants’ clothes to the table decorations, it’s also quite usual to have a motif such as beach/maritime or ‘The Princess Bride’, so there’s no reason why this can’t extend to the DJ. As stated above, a theme has to have broad appeal if the music is to be entirely composed of themed songs, especially if this is being used as a way to avoid arguments about requests. Because of the age of most Brides and Grooms these days ‘The 80s’ is one of the most popular themes. It is possible to limit the theme still further to say, ‘80s Rock’, which can be handy if this is being used as a compromise between the usual wedding music and the bride’s/groom’s love of hard rock.
