Music can be a hugely personal thing if you are really into ‘your music’ -
even if you aren’t ‘into music’ there will still be songs that you like and songs that you don’t…
Your Event: This is less of an issue for Events as the organiser’s tastes aren’t
necessarily indicative of the tastes of the attendees but, as the organiser, you will probably know the ages of the
attendees and you may know some of them well enough to know what sort of music they enjoy. This is information that
I will use to ascertain the best place to start the evening’s music – the bulk of the music necessarily
needs to cater to the average age of the attendees and in all likelihood will tend more towards classics than new
releases unless the average age is under 25, and even then, often, classic pop is more popular than a song that’s
just hit the charts.
Your Wedding: Your individual tastes, as Bride and Groom, are the most important factors in deciding
what gets played at your wedding. I approach every wedding on the basis that YOU know your taste and will have some
good ideas as to what your guests will enjoy. As a Wedding DJ I know what often works at weddings. Somewhere between
the two is what should probably be played at your wedding, which is exactly why every wedding is different and no DJ
can know with absolute certainty what will work at your wedding ahead of time - especially not before meeting with you.
At a wedding you can usually be sure of two significant age-groups – those guests that are around the age of
the Bride and Groom and those guests that are around the age of the couple’s parents. The size of the second
group, in combination with the tastes of the Bride and Groom themselves will usually define how many older songs are
played. That said, people dance to what they know, certainly at any event where there are people of varying ages
the only way you can be sure that people will know the songs is to play well-known pop music, and most people will
have a better idea of what was in the charts when they were 21 than what was in the charts when they were 40.
If you have very set ideas on the music you want see Theming or
Solutions, you may also be interested in my section on Jazz.
